Freeze Panes

Free Panes is a very useful tool when working with a worksheet that contains a great deal of data. With the purpose of making columns (header or title of the data within every column) and rows (the main or subject data) visible even if the user needs to scroll down or right.

Entering data huge amount of data will be easier as the user can always see the column header and subject data of the row. It can be a big help for any user as mistakes of entering data in the wrong column of the wrong will surely be prevented and analysis and presentation of data to other persons will be easier.

Applying Freeze Panes

Click the View Ribbon; Click the Freeze Panes to see the 3 Options available.

1. Freeze Panes – Keeps the columns and rows of the selection visible even the worksheet scrolls down or right. Freeze Panes will be applied based on the position of the cursor or selected cell. If the selected cell is C4 then Rows 1, 2 and 3 and columns A and B will stay visible.

2. Freeze Top Row – Keeps the Top row of the selection Visible. Based on the current selection the top most row visible of the time the Freeze Top Row was applied it will be freeze. If in the selection or visible part of the worksheet the row 4 is on the top, 3 scrolls down were made and rows 1, 2 and 3 are not visible, it will remain visible even the worksheet scrolls.

3. Freeze First Column – Keeps the First column on the left. Based on the current selection the left most column visible of the time the Freeze First Column was applied it will be freeze. If in the selection or visible part of the worksheet the column B is the first column on the left, a scroll to the right was made and column A is not visible, it will remain visible even the worksheet scrolls.

However there are things that we should always remember when using or applying free panes.

  • If freeze panes were applied on a selection where some columns on the left or rows at the top were not visible, those parts of the worksheet cannot be visible again unless the freeze panes will be removed. Remember the function Unhide will not work to make the affected parts visible again.

  • Users should be cautious especially when working with a worksheet made by other users as to what column and rows Freeze Panes was applied to see if there are rows and columns that were not visible due to the application of Freeze Panes.
